Goal-setting is simply a process of identifying a desire or what you want and then devising a plan on how to accomplish it. Just like a map to a driver, goal-setting acts like a guideline that we can follow in order to achieve what we want.

Goal-setting ensures that all the outcomes in your life are predetermined, self-directed, self-actualized, and self-determined. It ensures that you take total control of how you’d want your life or a certain outcome to be.

The major problem we face in society is lack of focus. This problem can be attributed to how social media has permeated every aspect of our lives. We are constantly being bombarded with so many things – things that are important and also unimportant. Having priorities is one of the important aspects of goal-setting. It ensures that you define your purpose, and values clearly.

Setting the right priorities ensures that you become more focused and less distracted by what’s going on around you.

A common theme amongst people is to blame, everyone wants to blame the other for their failures in life. The act of blame is a sign of irresponsibility. Goal-setting makes you responsible and ensures you understand that your future and life depends on your actions.

When you have a goal(s), you become purposeful in life. You don’t just follow the crowd; you understand your path in life and know the necessary actions required to get you to your destination.

You cannot measure what you don’t manage and you cannot improve what you cannot measure.

How to Set Goal

1.    Set Goals that are motivating and bold.

Grant Cardone the author of “The 10X Rule” noted that the reason why a lot of people never get to live a fulfilling life is that they set goals that are unmotivating and uninspiring. That to succeed in life requires goals that are 10X.

To begin, you have to have a strong why. Ask your self these questions before setting your goals;

  • Why do you need your goal or desire?
  • Why do you think you deserve your goal or desire?
  • How will you feel when you get it?
  • What difference will it make in your life?
  • What do you have to do to achieve your goal?

2.    Put Your Goals in Writing

Writing your goal is a process that engages your mind and ensures you become more aware of your desires. It shows that you’re serious about your need and that you’re committed toward its attainment.

When you write your goal(s), ensure to always review them periodically. This would give you more focus and help you to adjust where necessary.

3.    Set SMART Goals

A smart goal is simply an acronym that refers to Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For your goal to be motivating and empowering, it has to be SMART.

Specific: the reason why so many people never get to achieve their goal is that it’s too vague or generalized. Goals that are generalized won’t give you the necessary momentum to push through, it is like setting yourself up for failure and disappointments. Your goal has to be clearly defined, and specific. And you have to define the precise outcome you desire or want.

Measurable: Your goal should have metrics in which you can use in measuring your progress. Include the precise amount, date, and so on. Avoid generalizations.

Attainable: Ensure that your goal(s) is something within your ability and is possible to achieve. And this doesn’t mean setting goals that are simple and easy, doing so will only make you lazy, broke, and resentful. Attainable simply means that your goal should be something motivating, something that is possible or has been accomplished by someone else. It should be challenging and stimulating to you.

Relevant: Your goal should be relevant to where you want to go in life or whatever you desire. All activities and actions that you’ll need to take must be centered on the end result. This is because if your goal(s) is misaligned with your objective or target, the chances of you missing out on your goal will be high. And it’ll ultimately lead to frustration and anger.

Time-Bound: Your goal must have an end date. You need to set a timeframe for its acquisition. Having a timeframe is what’ll ensure that you’re focused and determined, and it is what will keep you motivated and inspired to keep pushing through. Not having a timeframe for your goal will only make you complacent and unmotivated.
