How to motivate yourself.
No matter who you are or what you do, there are moments in life when you’d feel unmotivated. There are moments when you’ll feel like there’s no point trying at all, that you should just give up especially when the results are not forthcoming.
My first business as an entrepreneur thought me much about the essence of motivation. I had so much hope that the business would bring me the breakthrough I needed in life. I labored so hard and invested most of my time studying and trying to improve the business but it never worked. There were times I hated going to the business, at some point, I questioned myself and asked what’s the point of suffering so much with no meaningful results to show for it.
I know most entrepreneurs can relate to this story. It’s not just entrepreneurs who get to feel this way, everyone has their moments. For some it could be relationships, for others, it could be work, school, and so on. Everyone goes through the doubting phase at some point in life, and motivation is the key that’ll help you to prevail and overcome. It is what will inspire and reignite the fire within you to keep on trying.
In this post, we shall look at how to motivate yourself even when you’re going through tough times or you feel like giving up.
How to motivate Yourself
1. Define Your Why
Life will throw all kinds of obstacles on your way but your ability to manage them and also overcome them is what will guarantee if you become successful or not.
The best way to get you motivated and also keep you motivated is for you to define your ‘why’.
“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how” ~ Friedrich Nietzsche.
You should have a good reason why you want what you desire and you should clearly define your values also. What’s important to you? Why is it important to you? What will happen if you don’t get it? Will you live in regrets if you quit?
Your reason is what will determine if you quit halfway or see it to the finish.
2. Set Goals
Goals are what guides us to our desires or targets in life. Goals are the things you’ve identified to be important to you and worth going after. The reason why most people get easily discouraged when things get tough is that they never had a well-defined goal(s). When you have a goal, you can overcome or bear any challenge or obstacle in life because you know your final destination. You know and understand ‘why’ you desire your goal.
3. Change your Perspective
This has to do with reframing your circumstance and interpretation of your situation or the condition you’re in. The meaning we give to the situations we’re in has an adverse effect on how we feel and act. If you think you’re a victim, a failure, or someone not worthy of success, the chances of you being happy will be slim. You’ll always find situations to validate your unworthiness and why you’re a failure.
Instead of seeing difficult times as a problem, see it as a learning phase, as a growth period that is necessary for you to become great. Have faith in yourself, and always pray for a better day. Remember, nothing lasts forever. Your situation will also pass.
4. Read Autobiography of People who Overcame the Same Problem.
There is a countless number of people on earth who have walked the same situation as yours, some have been through the worst kind of problems yet they came out victorious. These stories have a way of motivating us to become more, to dream more, and to believe that anything is possible. The best way on how to motivate yourself is to read these motivational books, the autobiographies of famous and successful people who overcame challenges and obstacles to become great in life. It will give you the mental strength to keep working hard.
As you read more often, you’ll develop resilience, perseverance, and the will to keep pushing on.
5. Associate with Positive Minded People
One of the best ways on how to motivate yourself is to associate with positive-minded people, people who are on the same path as you are, or people who have gone through similar situations and are doing great. It is said that you become the average of the five people you spend your time with.
If you spend, your time with successful, and positive-minded people, the chances of the success and positivity rubbing up on you are high. You’ll either become like them or even better.
6. Take a Break/ Step Back a Little
It is common for most of us to spend a lot of time wallowing in our problems even when a solution is not forthcoming. The best way on how to motivate yourself and any other person you know is to step back from your problem. Give it a break, and go away from the problem. Take a short walk, or give it some days. When you do, your mind refreshes and you’ll get to see the problem from a different vantage point. This is a great way to loosen up the mind and body, it gives you more vitality, strength, and energy to go on. Also, this method activates the thinker in you and spurs you to think creatively and constructively.
7. Avoid Negative People.
Negative people have a way of increasing every bad situation in your life. They know a million reasons why things won’t work; they’ll pollute your mind, and make you feel less worthy. When you’re low or going through a difficult moment or when you’re unmotivated, avoid negative people. And look for people who can motivate you.
Acceptance is the key to finding peace in life. Sure, you’ll have down moments, moments when you’ll feel unmotivated and maybe the need to give up. The best way to overcome these moments is to simply accept it, stop fighting it, and recognize that it’s just a momentary phase in life. it will definitely pass.
Get a Mentor.
A mentor is someone who has experienced, and who has walked on the same path as you. They understand how it feels, and they can help you to overcome your own moment. They can inspire you, encourage, educate, and support you. Bill Gates has Warren Buffet to motivate him to become better, Mark Zuckerberg had Steve Jobs to help him develop as an entrepreneur. It is no surprise that all great people on earth have mentors. They understand the importance of mentorship, and they also understand that the only way to avoid challenges or limit challenges is to have a mentor. A go-to person.
Get a Coach.
Coaches are your accountability partners, they can help you reignite your motivation, help you define your values, and work with you towards the accomplishment of your goals. Most successful people have coaches, and research shows that you can actually increase your chance of succeeding by 65% if you have an accountability partner.
11. Try Breaking Down your Goals
The reason why we sometimes get overwhelmed by our goals is that it’s too large and daunting. It is quite easy to be unmotivated when you perceive a task to be impossible or too large to handle. The best way on how to motivate yourself to work is for you to break down your task into bits. This gives you the necessary momentum to keep working. Whenever you feel unmotivated, think of the benefits you’ll get when you breakthrough, and find a way of rewarding yourself for the small accomplishments. This way, you’d see that your productivity level will increase tremendously.
